An Open Letter to Future Members of the Hingham Militia
From our hearts, to your hands—history is calling.
Dear Friend(s) and Patriots alike,
If you’ve ever stood on the sidewalk during a parade and felt a tug of curiosity… if you’ve walked through a historic site and wondered what life really looked and felt like back then… if you’re seeking something meaningful to do—you may have just found your place.
The Hingham Militia is more than a reenactment group. We’re neighbors, families, students, veterans, and lifelong learners who come together to honor our shared past. We bring the story of America’s founding to life—not to glorify war, but to preserve the voices, values, and everyday experiences of the people who shaped our nation, right here in New England. Since 1974, we’ve carried that mission forward with humility, pride, and joy.
We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds. For kids and teens, the Militia is a chance to connect history to something real—to learn teamwork, leadership, and respect for civic life. For adults, it’s a way to share passions, connect with your community, or even bond with your children or grandchildren in a meaningful, hands-on way. Some of our members portray militia soldiers, while others prefer civilian roles like colonial cooks, musicians, seamstresses, or teachers. There’s no pressure to be an expert—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to try something new.
So, how can you get started?
1. Visit our website – www.hinghammilitia.com – and explore upcoming events, photos, and frequently asked questions.
2. Come to an event – Whether you just want to observe, ask questions, or join us behind the scenes, we’d love to meet you in person.
3. Reach out – Email us, send a message through Facebook, or talk to one of our members. We’ll gladly walk you through what’s involved and how you can participate at your own pace.
4. Try it out – We offer guidance, loaner gear, and mentorship for new members. No need to show up in full uniform on day one.
You don’t need a history degree, a costume, or a clear plan. All you need is a sense of wonder and a little bit of heart. The rest, we’ll help you with. This is everyone’s Militia, and we’re proud to share it with new faces every year.
With warmth and welcome,

An Open Letter to New Members Beginning Their Journey
Your story in history is just beginning—and we’re here to help you suit up.
Dear Friend,
So—you’re ready to take the next step. Maybe you’ve marched with us once or twice, or watched from the sidelines and felt something spark. Maybe you’ve already decided: “This is for me.” Whether you’re excited, overwhelmed, or just plain curious about what it takes to “dress the part,” you are not alone—and you’re exactly where you should be.
Creating your first 18th-century uniform or civilian impression can feel like a big task, but it doesn’t have to be. The Hingham Militia has helped guide hundreds of new members, families, and young reenactors through this very same process—step by step, at your pace, and within your budget. We believe this journey should be fun, creative, and rooted in community—not stress or perfection. Many of us started with borrowed coats, hand-me-down breeches, or aprons stitched by friends.
Whether you’re portraying a militiaman, a camp follower, or a colonial tradesperson, we’ll help you choose the right direction based on your interests, age, and comfort level. We have members who specialize in gear, sewing, sourcing, and historical accuracy—ready to guide you in building a look that’s both authentic and manageable. From linen shirts and cartridge boxes to tricorn hats and period-correct shoes, you’ll find friendly faces and honest answers to every question you might have.
Here’s how to start:
Reach out to a member or message us through our website – Let us know you’re ready to start building your kit.
Tell us your interest – Are you leaning toward soldier, drummer, cook, seamstress, or youth role? We’ll help shape your first impression.
We’ll connect you with resources – including local and online vendors, recommended patterns, equipment checklists, and even gently used gear from fellow members.
Try before you buy – We often have loaner gear you can wear while you’re building your own. No one starts out perfect—we all evolve into our personas over time.
Walk before you march – We’ll support you through drills, etiquette, safety, and setup so you’re not just dressed like history—you’re living it.
We believe that building a uniform is not just about clothing—it’s about stepping into a story. A story you now get to tell with your own hands, your own voice, and your own passion. Whether you’re 12 or 72, this experience will deepen your connection to history, to your community, and often, to your own family.
We’re proud to have you here. Let’s get started.
With respect and excitement,
The Hingham Militia Mentorship Team

An Open Letter to Veterans Considering the Hingham Militia
From one tradition of service to another—your story continues here.
Dear Veteran,
First and foremost: thank you. Whatever your branch, rank, or years served—your dedication and sacrifice are deeply respected by all of us in the Hingham Militia.
We’d like to invite you to consider a new kind of mission: one rooted in honor, education, and community. The Hingham Militia, established in 1974, is a living history organization that recreates and preserves the spirit and story of America’s citizen-soldiers during the Revolutionary War. We are made up of people from all walks of life—including many veterans—who find purpose, camaraderie, and healing in portraying the men and women who stood for liberty in the earliest days of our nation.
For those who’ve worn the uniform in modern times, reenacting offers something uniquely powerful: a connection to the roots of American service. Marching in step, raising the flag, and educating others about our past isn’t just symbolic—it’s personal. Many veterans in our ranks say that the structure, community, and sense of duty they found in the military reemerges here, but with a softer rhythm and a broader purpose. It’s a place to give back, stay active, share wisdom, and be part of something that matters.
You don’t need to know anything about 18th-century history to get started. We’ll help you build a uniform, learn the drills, and find the role that suits you—whether that’s in a firing line, behind a fife and drum, or helping organize events and educate the public. Whether you’re looking for connection, reflection, or a way to share your passion for service with younger generations, the Hingham Militia offers a place where your experience is not only welcomed—it’s needed.
We hope you’ll consider walking with us—through history, into the community, and as part of a new mission worth marching for.
With respect and open arms,
The Hingham Militia
